Voltron is the giant robot created from the combination of all five Voltron Lions. It has been ten thousand years since it was last formed, and its return is brought about when Shiro returns to Earth a year after his capture by the Galra Empire, drawing Keith, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge together to locate the Blue Lion and use it to find the Castle of Lions on Arus. They reawaken its sleeping inhabitants, Princess Allura and Coran, and these last living Alteans help locate the subsequent Lions to form Voltron and defend the universe against Zarkon's empire.
Voltron was created ten thousand years ago by King Alfor after a comet of trans-reality ore collided with Daibazaal during a time when planet Alfor held an alliance with the planet's ruler, Zarkon. King Alfor built the Voltron Lions from the Quintessence-infused ore of the comet and Zarkon became the Black Paladin to defend his home planet from the darkness escaping from the reality rift left at the comet's crash site. He was joined by Alfor, Trigel, Gyrgan, and Blaytz. Coran's grandfather built the Castle of Lions to house the Lions and Voltron was known as a heroic fighting force.
Once Zarkon and his wife, Honerva, became obsessed with the Quintessence found in the reality rift, the exposure damaging Honerva's health, Zarkon attempted to bring Honerva into the rift using Voltron so he could save her with the Quintessence and darkness within. His fellow Paladins were not aware of his trickery until it was too late. The overexposure seemed to kill both he and his wife when they recklessly left the safety of Voltron inside the rift.
But after Alfor held their funeral and destroyed the evacuated Daibazaal to erase the reality rift forever, Zarkon and Honerva awakened, changed and corrupted by their ordeal. Zarkon flew into a rage at Alfor and the Alteans for the loss of the rift, sparking a war and the beginnings of the Galra Empire. Zarkon desired to capture Voltron so he could use the robot's power to create another rift and obtain the purest Quintessence of infinite amount. This led King Alfor to put Allura and Coran in a deep sleep inside cryo-pods within the Castle of Lions, and to scatter the Voltron Lions to hidden locations across the universe so they would not fall into Zarkon's hands. Alfor led Zarkon to believe the Lions were destroyed, and so Zarkon slayed the king, his fellow Paladins, and destroyed Altea.
Each Lion comprises a part of Voltron, and each pilot of a Lion is called a Paladin. The Lions and Paladins are color-coded to match each other. When formed as Voltron, the Paladins pilot the giant robot in unison. The Lions and known Paladins are as follows:
Weapons & Abilities
Befitting of a super robot, Voltron is armed to the teeth with weapons. Besides its immense physical strength and ability to fly, Voltron has access to the mouth cannons of the Green Lion and Red Lion for combat, the Green Lion's shield for defense, and Red Lion's jaw blade for close-quarters combat. The wings of the Black Lion can detach from the robot and combine to form a much larger shield wielded by the Green Lion. It is also possible for a Lion to split off from the robot while it remains otherwise formed and use its own abilities.
In addition, when a Paladin's Bayard is inserted into the control console of a Lion, it acts as a key to unlock a large, powerful weapon for Voltron to wield based on the Paladin, such as a saber when Keith inserts a Bayard into the Red Lion or Black Lion. Having multiple Bayards inserted into their respective Lions' control consoles will activate upgraded abilities.
The known Bayard abilities for Voltron are:
- Keith: Saber
- Hunk: Shoulder Cannon
- Keith, Pidge, Hunk, and Lance: Enlarged Cutlass
- Shiro and Keith: Blazing Sword
- In the original Japanese anime Beast King GoLion, Voltron was called GoLion.
- Christine Bian, the series design supervisor, claims re-imagining the iconic Voltron figure was the most difficult challenge for the staff. Series staff looked at Gundam and other mecha anime for inspiration in designing the new Voltron robot. At one point during production, Christine unintentionally designed the Black Lion to look like a zebra.
